Piran Slovenia overlooks the Adriatic Sea and captivates visitors with its Mediterranean charm, historical treasures, and stunning coastal views. I had the opportunity to visit in August of 2023 and the weather was incredible! I’d like to share why Piran should be on your travel radar, what I learned about traveling in Slovenia, and what I would do differently.
I quickly learned that Slovenia is much more beautiful and magnificent than I ever could have imagined! I felt that the pace is slower than bordering Italy, which I enjoyed. Slovenians love the great outdoors and their love for camping abounds everywhere! All areas in Piran are clean and well-maintained.

Parking Warning!
While everything about Piran was beautiful, the parking experience wasn’t! I parked in a small lot adjacent to the entrance to the Walls of Piran. I didn’t see meters anywhere, nor did I see the sign that the lot was reserved for season-pass holders! When I returned to my car, I was welcomed with an 80 euro ticket! Be warned about this and the steep fine! I could not find a bank or service in Slovenia or Italy where I could pay the fine so I had to coordinate a bank transfer with my credit union in the US. The hefty fees of an international wire transfer about doubled the fine!
What I wish I knew, and what I would do differently, is to purchase a vignette before driving on Slovenian highways! A vignette is simply a way for you to pay for the maintenance and upkeep of their highways. They are inexpensive and you can purchase one for as little as seven days. Driving without one could cost you 300-800 euros! The vignettes do not cover any of the tolls, which will be sent to your rental car company. Be prepared to pay, approximately, an additional 75 euros for your rental car company to forward you the bill! I hope you will learn from my oversights and visit beautiful Piran. My only regret is that I didn’t have more time to spend there!
